  • Praying for success in the JLPT (Ikimi Tenmangu Shrine) - Japanese Language School Kyoto Asuka Academia
On June 30th, we visited Seiki Tenmangu Shrine, the oldest Tenmangu Shrine in Japan.

This is a historic Tenmangu Shrine, known as Ikimi Tenmangu Shrine, as it is the only one in the country where Sugawara no Michizane was worshiped as a living shrine while he was still alive, and is said to be the oldest Tenmangu Shrine in Japan.

“If you follow the example of Sugawara no Michizane and work hard with the fervent desire to pass, he will surely watch over you, bestow his divine blessings, and assist you.” With the JLPT exam looming, students have been flocking to the “god of learning” to pray to him.

The day we visited the shrine coincided with the summer purification ceremony.

We were able to witness a performance of Imayo Utau Bugaku and pass through a sacred straw circle, experiencing traditional Japanese culture firsthand and feeling our body and soul purified.

Now, everyone! All that’s left is to study!! Let’s all do our best to pass the JLPT!!
