  • Yamashina Sannomiya Shrine Festival - Japanese Language School Kyoto Asuka Academia
The Yamashina Festival will be held on the third Sunday of October for the first time in four years.
Most of the local guardian shrines in Yamashina Ward, Kyoto City will hold grand festivals.
A group of volunteer students from our school were assisted by the Sannomiya Shrine Mikoshi Association and were able to carry the mikoshi.

The meeting time is 6am. Rubbing sleepy eyes, we change into happi coats, which we’ve never seen before, and head to the shrine.

The members of the Mikoshi Association teach us how to carry the mikoshi, and then it’s time for the big day.

The full-scale mikoshi weighed about one ton, and even the students who were confident in their strength cried out, “This is harder than a part-time job!!” but with the support of many people, they were able to carry it with all their might until the very end.

We had a fulfilling day interacting with local people and experiencing Japanese culture.
Thank you for giving me this valuable experience.
